The Black Paintings: Dead White Man (2012)

Tracey Rose

Carte blanche Collection 49 Nord 6 Est – Frac Lorraine, Metz (FR)

During this performance, the artist visits the grave of the Belgian king Léopold II, reciting the names of African political chiefs assassinated under his reign. Using her body to convey suffering, she performs an exorcism, driving out the demons of colonialism that haunt her. The title (referring to Lucy, the world’s earliest woman and the biblical characters Adam and Eve) denotes the supposed origins of humankind. Rose addresses the myths, seeking “counterevidence” and ways to subvert religious dogmas, scientific theories of evolution and art history conventions.
